How I Got Here

My name is Caroline and my love for the environment and gardening started when I was a child. I was always fascinated by the natural world and loved exploring in every way I could. I went to Penn State and got my BS in Environmental Resource Management. I spent a little over two years while in college as a research assistant on various farms and absolutely fell in love with being out in the environment working and making steps towards improving our world. I then got my MS in Environmental Engineer and spent the last 13+ years in the environmental and civil land development industries. I am a licensed engineer in three states and have extensive experience in land development, local permitting, stormwater and sustainability.

My family and I live on a 40-acre farmstead called Waltz Creek Farmstead where we focus on organic and regenerative agricultural practices. We have laying and meat chickens and cattle as well as cats, goats and dogs as pets. We grow as much as we can here including potatoes, sweet corn, blueberries, and tons of vegetables. We have a roadside farm stand where we sell eggs, produce, candles, and more.

I decided to combine my loves of agriculture, sustainability and engineering to start Leila & Leaf Garden Consulting so I can help bring other’s dreams of a kitchen garden to life.

Behind the Name

Growing up in Ohio, my younger sister and I would go to “Grandma camp” in the summer where our parents would drop us off to spend time with our Grandma and Grandpa out in the country. I have so many memories from Grandma camp and I know that’s where my love for the environment, sustainability and eventually gardening grew. We would spend time in the garden weeding or picking vegetables and under the carport shucking corn, snapping peas, or cutting up apples. My Grandma, whose beautiful name is Leila, is a life-long gardener, and a large part of that was from necessity to feed her family. Their garden was what sustained them throughout the year. She focuses on vegetables that she can preserve and enjoy all year long and has basically perfected her craft.

I often find myself thinking, “what would grandma do”. She didn’t have social media telling her a thousand different ways to do something or the endless options for seeds, tools, etc. She kept it simple and stuck to what she knew works. This mindset is strong in my family and I apply the same principles to my business.
